On February 2, 2027, the Saskatchewan Community Foundation invites you to the fourth annual CommUNITY for Women fundraising breakfast, from 7:30 am – 10:30 am at the Conexus Arts Centre. This event supports the Emergent Women and Children’s Fund, which provides urgent assistance to women and children facing family and intimate partner violence. With Saskatchewan’s rate of violence more than double the national average, there has never been a more important time to show up for one another.
Imagine a morning surrounded by soft blush pink, beautiful bows, familiar faces, new friendships, and a room full of people who believe in the power of community. Enjoy a cup of coffee, share a conversation, hear stories of resilience, and discover the difference we can make when we choose to stand together.
This year’s theme, The Ties That Bind, is a celebration of what happens when we strengthen the connections around us. Those connections are the ties between women and their communities, between generations, between the people who give and the organizations doing the work, and between a community and the women and children who need someone to stand beside them.
Because no one should have to face hardship alone.

When I applied for support through the Emergent Women and Children’s Fund, I was living in supportive housing and trying to build toward something more permanent. I had utility arrears that had become a major financial barrier. My goal was not only to maintain stable housing for myself, but to work toward reuniting with my daughter and eventually having the opportunity to secure a home for both of us.
I received $2,000 in assistance toward my utility arrears. Taking care of this debt removed one of the major barriers standing between me and long-term stabilized housing.
This support came during an incredibly difficult period in my life. More than simply paying a bill, it gave me an opportunity to continue working toward stability and the future I want for my family.

When I received support, I was carrying rental arrears at a time when life was already very difficult. I am a working mother, but the financial pressure of those arrears was another burden I had to carry while also trying to focus on healing and maintaining stability for myself and my family.
Through the Emergent Women and Children’s Fund, I received $1,000 in housing assistance, paid directly toward my housing-related costs.
“This assistance helped lower my rental arrears at a time when life was very difficult.”
The funding did not make every challenge disappear, but it made one significant challenge more manageable. Reducing what I owed gave me some breathing room during an already difficult period and helped me continue maintaining my housing while focusing on the other areas of my life that needed my attention.

Emily, a single mother working with the YWCA Outreach Housing Team, was trying to manage two pressing needs at once: keeping her home secure and ensuring her son had enough to eat.
Overdue water and power bills put her at risk of utility disconnection, which would have breached her lease and could have resulted in eviction. At the same time, rising grocery costs during the summer made it difficult to consistently provide food for her son once school meal programs were no longer available.
Emily received $1943.18 from the Emergent Women and Children’s Fund, and was able to pay the outstanding utility bills directly to service providers and secure grocery gift cards, which were managed alongside her Housing Support Worker. The assistance kept the utilities connected, protected the family’s housing, and helped ensure food was available throughout the summer. Emily also continued receiving budgeting support to strengthen her longer-term financial stability.
In her follow-up survey, Emily said the assistance had taken “a lot of weight and stress off” her shoulders. Most importantly, she said she was better able to care for and support her son.
For Emily, the funding helped prevent one financial challenge from becoming a housing crisis while providing the immediate stability she needed to focus on caring for her child.

Nicole and her children were living in emergency shelter after fleeing domestic violence. As she prepared to move toward permanent housing, the costs associated with starting again presented another barrier. She needed assistance with a damage deposit, groceries, transportation, and essential household setup costs.
From the Emergent Women and Children’s Fund, Nicole received $2000.00 to help remove some of those immediate financial barriers as she worked toward securing a safe and stable home for herself and her children.
The impact extended beyond the immediate expenses. In her follow-up survey, Nicole described her situation as “much better.” Transportation assistance allowed her to begin reapplying for her learner’s license, an important step toward greater independence and future employment opportunities. She also reported feeling more confident and hopeful about the future and expressed gratitude that the support was helping create a better future for both herself and her children.
For Nicole, the funding helped make a safe new beginning more attainable, removing immediate barriers while supporting greater independence, stability, and hope for her family.

Amanda, a single mother of two, was facing the possibility of losing her family’s home after unexpected debt repayments were automatically withdrawn from her account. The withdrawals left her unable to pay $705 rent, and Regina Housing issued an eviction warning.
With her family’s housing at immediate risk, funding from the Emergent Women and Children’s Fund was used to cover the $705 in rental arrears. The intervention prevented the eviction, allowing Amanda and her children to remain in their home and maintain their connections to school, community, and existing support networks.
When surveyed afterward, Amanda said her situation was “much better.” She identified stable housing for herself and her children as the most significant outcome of support and described herself as “a success story.”
For Amanda and her children, timely financial assistance prevented an immediate housing crisis and provided the stability they needed to move forward.

There are moments in life when everything feels like it’s slipping out of reach at once, when just keeping a roof over your head and food on the table takes every ounce of energy you have. For Dawn, a young mother navigating life on her own with a baby, that moment arrived quietly but heavily.
Dawn had fallen behind on her rent. The arrears had climbed to $1,000, a number that felt impossible to reach on her own. Without help, the risk of losing her housing was real and growing. At the same time, she was managing without something many of us take for granted: a health card. Basic access to care for herself and her child felt out of reach. Getting around the city, to appointments, to services, to the things that come up and are important for basic function, was another daily challenge without reliable transportation.
She wasn’t asking for much. She was asking for just enough to stay stable.
Through the Emergent Women and Children’s Fund, Dawn received emergency support that helped her address her rent arrears, access groceries, obtain her health card, and get a bus pass for herself and her baby. In her own words, the funding would help her feel “so much better once it was cashed” — a simple, honest reflection of what it means to have relief on the horizon when you’ve been holding your breath.

Dawn’s gratitude is understated, but the impact is not. Stable housing, nourishment, healthcare access, and the ability to move through her community, these are the foundations that allow a mother to look forward instead of simply survive. This support addressed immediate needs; and it gave Dawn and her child a chance to pause and work towards stability.

Amara is a mother who works hard for everything she has. When her relationship ended under difficult circumstances, she found herself facing a financial situation that threatened everything she’d built. Money she had earned was gone. Rent was overdue. Utilities were at risk of being shut off. And through it all, she was trying to hold herself together for the sake of her children.
The sense of loss wasn’t just financial. Amara described feeling like all of her hard work had amounted to nothing — like the ground had shifted beneath her and she couldn’t find her footing. She was doing everything right, and still, she was slipping.
Through emergency support from the Emergent Women and Children’s Fund, Amara received help with $2,200 in urgent housing and utility costs, including overdue rent for her apartment and utility payments for power, heat, and water that were nearing disconnection with $700 dollars in overdue payments.
The support arrived at exactly the right moment. It didn’t just pay bills; it gave her back a sense of control. It kept her and her children in their home, and it allowed her to keep showing up for them every day.
“Honestly, I felt lost and like all my hard work was for nothing with this money I owed growing over me. I could not be more thankful for the YWCA for helping me get back to a stable place to keep supporting my kids.”
Amara reported that things are now much better compared to before she received support. She described feeling safer, more stably housed, and more able to care for her children. She noted feeling respected, connected to services and community, and more confident and hopeful about what lies ahead.
For Amara, this support was about more than catching up on bills. It was about being seen, being helped, and being given a chance to get back on solid ground — so she could keep being the mother she has always worked to be.

In the fall, Katelyn’s life was turned upside down in a single night. Her partner physically assaulted her, and by the time the police had made an arrest, she found herself alone with her two young children, trying to figure out how to survive. The immediate aftermath was overwhelming. Her partner had controlled the household finances, and when he left, so did the stability she had counted on. She needed to come up with a $1,300 damage deposit just to remain in the apartment she and her children called home. The phone and utilities had been registered in her name, but she had no money to keep them running. At the same time, she was grieving — not just the relationship, but the version of her life she thought she had.
Her children were her anchor. Katelyn accessed every community resource she could find: food banks, community fridges, and food shelves. But even those couldn’t fill every gap. There were no diapers. There was no formula. The bills kept stacking up, and the window to secure her housing was closing fast.
Through the Emergent Women and Children’s Fund, Katelyn received emergency support at a moment when she was, in her own words, drowning. The funding helped cover the damage deposit so she and her children could remain safely housed. It helped her keep her cellphone active — a lifeline for communication with support workers, services, and loved ones. It allowed her to transfer utility services into her own name and to stock up on essentials: baby items, food, and even small gifts for her children at Christmas.
“It helped me get a new damage deposit so me and my kids can stay housed. It helped keep my cellphone on and I was able to transfer utility services into my name. It also helped me stock up on baby items and food for us so I don’t have to worry about that for a while. I am so grateful my worker found this funding and helped take so much stress off my shoulders. Thank you guys so much!”
When Katelyn’s worker called to share the news that she’d been approved, they both cried. It wasn’t just relief — it was hope.
“When my worker said that she found this funding and that I was accepted, we both jumped around my living room in tears. I was so close to being on the street with my children and this funding gave me hope. Thank you for all the work you do for women and children. I never thought I would ever be a victim of domestic assault, and I am so grateful there are people out there willing to help.”
Katelyn reported feeling much better than before she received the support. She described feeling safer, more stably housed, better able to care for her children, respected, connected to community and services, and hopeful about the future. She preferred not to be contacted further — but she wanted her story shared, so others in similar situations might know that help exists.
For Katelyn, this support was more than financial relief. It was the foundation she needed to begin rebuilding, for herself, and for her children.
