Amara is a mother who works hard for everything she has. When her relationship ended under difficult circumstances, she found herself facing a financial situation that threatened everything she’d built. Money she had earned was gone. Rent was overdue. Utilities were at risk of being shut off. And through it all, she was trying to hold herself together for the sake of her children.
The sense of loss wasn’t just financial. Amara described feeling like all of her hard work had amounted to nothing — like the ground had shifted beneath her and she couldn’t find her footing. She was doing everything right, and still, she was slipping.
Through emergency support from the Emergent Women and Children’s Fund, Amara received help with $2,200 in urgent housing and utility costs, including overdue rent for her apartment and utility payments for power, heat, and water that were nearing disconnection with $700 dollars in overdue payments.
The support arrived at exactly the right moment. It didn’t just pay bills; it gave her back a sense of control. It kept her and her children in their home, and it allowed her to keep showing up for them every day.
“Honestly, I felt lost and like all my hard work was for nothing with this money I owed growing over me. I could not be more thankful for the YWCA for helping me get back to a stable place to keep supporting my kids.”
Amara reported that things are now much better compared to before she received support. She described feeling safer, more stably housed, and more able to care for her children. She noted feeling respected, connected to services and community, and more confident and hopeful about what lies ahead.
