2024 Truth and Reconciliation Fund Grant Recipient— $7,380.45
- Built student, staff and community understanding for intercultural understanding, empathy and mutual respect.
- Share information and best practices on teaching Indigenous history and residential schools.
- Engaging Indigenous students in learning more about cultural practices and providing opportunities to share this (sweats, teepee teachings for example).
- Engage elders as part of our campuses for teaching, mentorship and culturally-sensitive counselling support.
This funding allowed us to run an Oskapiyoos (elder’s helper ) program. This program was provided weekly. Elder Dale Mosquito provided cultural training to Indigenous students and community members that allowed them to support cultural programming in town on Nekaneet First Nation. We were also able to open the teachings and presentations up to all students and staff and we all learned together about the history of Nekaneet, what Truth and Reconciliation means to each of us, medicine wheel teaching etc. Through this program, elder Dale provided a sweat in January. He provided elder support and counselling in group and individual settings and our students cited this as one of the best parts of the year.
