History of the Regina Floral Conservatory
The Regina Floral Conservatory is operated and maintained by volunteers of the Regina Garden Associates, a non-profit, charitable organization, in partnership with the City of Regina. The Conservatory is home to Regina’s premiere indoor garden display and is open seven days a week from September to June. During the operating season, there are six featured floral displays that are designed, installed, and maintained by our volunteers. The Conservatory is also a venue for regularly scheduled events (e.g., teas and meditation classes), small weddings, and other social gatherings.

The current facility was established by the City of Regina during the 1950s. It housed the main office building for the City Parks and Recreation Department and consisted of three small greenhouses to grow plant material used to beautify the city. One of these greenhouses was later opened to the public featuring a variety of themed displays, so that the residents of Regina and area could enjoy an indoor green space. Two of the small greenhouses were dismantled in 1990, and in 1996, Regina’s City Council proposed to close the remaining greenhouse (the one open to the public) and their horticultural program in favour of contracting commercial suppliers for plant material for city parks and flowerbeds. Due to enthusiastic public support, the display greenhouse was kept open, and in 1999, a partnership was formed with the Regina Garden Associates to maintain the floral display, organize rentals and events, and operate a small gift shop in the main facility.
The Regina Garden Associates was formed as a non-profit organization in 1991 with the goal of supporting the establishment and development of horticultural projects within the City of Regina. In 1999, the Regina Garden Associates and the City formed a partnership to maintain the display greenhouse, oversee special events, and run a small gift shop. Over the last three decades, the Regina Garden Associates have focused on working with students, teachers and parents from Regina and area schools to foster awareness of gardening, horticulture and the environment.
Vision
To grow a strong, sustainable community that values spending time with plants to cultivate health, hope, and happiness to achieve a state of well-being.
Mission
Through the floral conservatory, we collaborate with our partners to connect people with plants by providing education, programming, and events to foster well–being, harmony, and a lifelong love of nature.
Community Impact
The current floral conservatory is an asset to the community and city in a variety of ways. We expect our impact to grow with increased capacity and resources for programs. Following are a few highlights of the impact of the current floral conservatory on the community.
Tourism (2024-2025 season):
Events and Rentals
The Regina Garden Associates rents the Regina Floral Conservatory to the community for life milestones such weddings, baby and bridal showers, celebrations of life, family and team building parties, photo sessions, and other social engagements.
Education (2024-2025 season):
Community Wellbeing
There is a growing body of scientific evidence that shows a link between spending time in green spaces and improved mental and physical well-being. Winters on the Canadian Prairies can be cold and bleak, and the Regina Floral Conservatory is the primary option in Regina for an indoor greenspace that is accessible to everyone.
New Floral Conservatory Project
The Regina Garden Associates is a growing organization and a new facility for the Regina Floral Conservatory would allow our programs to grow and expand as well. Due to the age and size of the current facility, there are increasing costs for maintenance and repairs, as well as limited capacity for programs and events. The design of a new floral conservatory facility will incorporate the most current sustainable technologies and be purpose-built for the needs of the Regina Garden Associates.
A new facility would also provide/allow:
- increased space, which in turn increases the available capacity for programs and events and allows more people to participate.
- the Regina Floral Conservatory to be open for twelve months of the year, instead of the nine months that the current facility is open. This shortened season is due to a lack of cooling infrastructure in the current facility.
- more space for plants and space for the trees to grow to their full potential.
