Bill and Helen Davidson ~ A Life Well Lived
Helen Eugenia (Campbell) Davidson was born on October 18, 1908 in Morganston, ON. The Campbells moved to Weyburn, Sk in 1910 where Helen lived the rest of her life.
As a family they began attending Calvary Baptist Church which began a long association with the church, which lasted her entire life. Helen had a gift of music that would become a life long ministry to the community of Weyburn. She went to Brandon College and received her ATCM Diploma in 1929. In 1930 she was appointed as Church Organist of Calvary Baptist Church, a position she held for over 60 years. She worked with 27 pastors, including Rev. Tommy Douglas. She served her Lord in other capacities and was made a Life Deacon of the church.
Her piano teaching career spanned over 70 years, beginning by traveling to Bengough & Radville by train to teach for 4 days a week with two days in each town. After 3 years of this difficult arrangement she set up a studio in Weyburn. As a dedicated teacher who loved her students like her children, she was not only proud of those who did well and went on to become musical stars, but also of those who felt they had benefited from being her student. She took a very active part for many years with the Music Festival, was a 50 year member of the Registered Music Teacher’s Association and was also the region’s representative for the Royal Conservatory of Music for over 25 years.
She was a member of the Alexander Rebekah Lodge since 1943 serving as Noble Grand and was a life member, also a Charter Member of Quota International formed in Weyburn in 1954.
In 1954 she married William John Davidson of Heward SK who died in 1962 after 8 years of marriage.
She was loved for her passion for her students, her leadership in her community activities and her loyalty to her church. She passed away in Weyburn in Mar 2011, at the age of 102.
William John Davidson was born & farmed in the Heward, Sk area, loving the land & the community. He served on the Municipal council for several years. On December 29, 1954 he married Helen Campbell and they resided in Weyburn. After 8 years of marriage, Bill passed away. He always told Helen never to sell the Oil Rights to the land, which was prophetic as it lies in the heart of the Bakken Oil Field. Production of oil began in 2009, & all royalties have since gone to the Bill & Helen Davidson Foundation which was set up in 2008 at Helen’s request.
